Built in three large batches during the 1970s for British Steel, these wagons were principally seen transporting iron ore betwen Redcar and Consett in the north east of England, Port Talbot and Llanwern in south Wales & Hunterston and Ravenscraig in Scotland. As these flows ceased over the coming decades, the wagons found alternative use transporting aggregate in the south east and west of England before finally being withdrawn in the mid 2010s.
JTAs are the 'outer' variant used at either end of a consist, fitted with conventional draw-gear for hauling by a locomotive. The more numerous JUAs are the 'inner' variant and sandwiched between the JTAs. Prior to this, both inner and outer variants were classified as PTAs.
